Ford Motor Company has named the first markets that will sell the Focus Electric, Ford’s all-electric passenger car: Atlanta; Austin and Houston, Texas; Boston; Chicago; Denver; Detroit; Los Angeles; San Francisco; San Diego; New York; Orlando, Fla.; Production will occur on the same line as the gasoline version of the Focus.

The vehicles and infrastructure being funded include the use of natural and renewable gas, propane, ethanol, biodiesel, electricity, and hybrid technologies. The program includes the installation of 10 alternative fuel refueling sites (two B20, one Electric Recharging, and seven CNG). Total DOE award: $15,000,000.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) would combine today’s new gas-electric hybrid technology with larger batteries that could provide an all-electric operating range of 25 to 35 miles or more. The result is an 80+ mile-per-gallon vehicle — with even greater fuel economy possible utilizing bio-fuels.

Based on our half-day of driving the new Tiguan in the foothills of Denver, the automaker has succeeded on the quality front. This application also provides some insight into the “beyond diesel” but “before electric” strategy for the brand in the US. For the longer term, however, Volkswagen is clearly focused on electric.
