Those exact words came from my wife’s mouth when I suggested we rent an electric car for a week’s family holiday in France. Sure, it’d be a gamble fraught with charging uncertainty. A stuck charging cable. Holiday days planned around EV charging. Charging is Easy! How spectacularly naive.

With sensible hat on we can appreciate EVs with efficiency, long range, fast charging and silky silent smoothness. Rapid charging, V2L and liveable 448km range seal the deal. Biggest EV surprise of 2023: God awful charging infrastructure I’m not choosing a car. Then I had a catastrophic holiday in France with a rental EV.

Renault’s coming small EVs will deliver European style at Chinese prices… and they’re likely to make it to Australia. These cells will be manufactured in a new gigafactory close to the 4 and 5 assembly lines in the north of France, reducing logistics costs. “And we will be above 400km for the 52kWh.”

The crane is powered by a 11 liter Volvo engine, which is imported from France. The flywheel is downsized to give a continuum between shift of gears, else unlike a ICE engine, when you take your leg off the pedal, the motor goes zero torque when you are re-engaging gears. The motor is a 4 kW brush DC motor.

Rain is lashing down on the Vosges Mountains near France’s border with Germany. We’re nearing ski-resort altitude on the winding road, and the EQE53 is doing amazing things. Range and charging. The EQE53 can accept up to 170kW of DC charging. A 10-80 percent charge should take as little as 33 minutes.

But its keys were handed to me by Europcar France as my holiday EV rental, in lieu of the Hyundai Kona Electric I’d ordered. But if the brand survives in France for that amount of time is another matter.
