The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has published a report that describes the design of a superconducting direct current (DC) cable system capable of moving thousands of megawatts of electricity between regions, and which is practical and ready for commercial development, using today’s technology.

Greater Washington DC will be an initial launch market for the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended range. Chevrolet also announced a development and demonstration program with DC-area utilities Pepco and Dominion to introduce customers to electric vehicles and establish vehicle charging programs.

The Santa Clara Electric Vehicle Charging Center, located at the city’s Tasman Parking Garage, features 48 Level 2 chargers and one DC Fast Charger. The 6-story parking structure has a 370 kW photovoltaic installation, and uses battery technology from Green Charge Networks to help offset peak power demand with stored power to lower costs.
