GM announced that the first buyers of the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended-range capability will be eligible for one of 4,400 free home charging stations. In many cases, it will include the cost of home installation. The program will provide Volt owners with a 240-volt charge station from either ECOtality, Inc.

A new Federal Grant will enable many electric vehicle early adopters to get their chargers for free. Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) home wall units are priced at between about $1000 and $2500. Need it cost this much? I believe in government support for electric vehicles (and many other things also on the congressional chopping block at the moment.) Cost of upgrade: under $300. Plus installation.

To install 4-180 kW chargers can easily cost roughly $500,000-$800,000 depending on the hardware chosen. With the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill grants covering up to 80% of the cost of charging infrastructure projects, that means that a charging location with 8-180 kW chargers can easily cost taxpayers $1 million.
