Controlled Power Technologies (CPT) is developing a 48-volt version of its 12 volt electric supercharger based on its variable torque enhancement system known as VTES. At 48 volts, a VTES electric supercharger will transform 7kW of battery power into a highly boosted charge of air for downsized gasoline and diesel engines.

The low voltage approach compared with full hybrid and EV nominal voltages, which are typically in the range of 300 to 600V, avoids the need for high cost safety features and large battery packs. SR machines are ideally suited to this concept of low cost development, while reducing the cost of production components.

It is alarming to see comparisons of the Chevrolet Volt PHEV with battery electric cars when the comparison focuses only on the electric range and ignores the other important differences. The 2900 miles traveled by the Volt, drawing upon its combustion engine, produced far less CO 2 since the Volt uses a small and more efficient engine.
