The HPEV system uses lead acid batteries to power an electric motor drive which in turn powers a traction motor attached to the rear axle of a vehicle.

Current mild-hybrid vehicle projects, in partnership with Ford and Hyundai/Kia, that utilize advanced 48V lead-carbon batteries, can reduce CO 2 emissions by 15-20%, according to the latest data from the Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC), presented at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (25-28 January, Mainz).

In contrast, lead-acid batteries have a 99% recycling rate in the US. The IRA leaves it up to the folks that are making the batteries to try and get the material back and build a circular supply chain, which is essentially what happens with lead-acid batteries. But right now, used lead-acid batteries are a commodity.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. So far, most start as hybrids.
