The decarbonization of the transportation sector will require large volumes of renewable fuels. So far, renewable diesel and jet fuels are mainly derived from plant oils, but the EU Renewable Energy Directive limits the use of biofuel from food and feed crops since they do not meet sustainability requirements when produced at large scale.

In Italy, Eni and Hera signed a partnership agreement with the aim of converting used vegetable oil into renewable diesel for Hera’s waste collection vehicles. Green Diesel—renewable diesel—is produced by Ecofining technology developed in Eni’s laboratories in collaboration with Honeywell UOP.

Eni plans to convert its Venice (Italy) Refinery into a biorefinery producing innovative and high quality biofuels. Enel Green Power, through its North American renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power North America, Inc. The project, which is expected to be operational in 2023, will convert renewable energy from one of EGPNA’s solar plants in the United States into green hydrogen to be supplied to a bio-refinery.

Genomatica and Novamont have signed a definitive agreement establishing a joint venture (JV) for the first industrial plant in Europe producing butanediol (BDO) directly from renewable feedstocks. Genomatica and Novamont have signed a letter of intent to establish a joint venture that is expected to lead to the first industrial plants in Europe producing butanediol (BDO) from renewable feedstocks. The first plant is expected to have a production capacity of approximately 40 million pounds per year and will be located in Italy.
