The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid will be distributed in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont, but customers in any of the other states can custom order the vehicle at their local Hyundai dealer. The transmission uses an electric oil pump, which helps improve efficiency.

The engine also uses an electrically driven air conditioning compressor and water pump to reduce mechanical losses. EPA label calculations do not include Eco mode.
