Congressionally-created Commission Recommends Mileage Tax Instead of Fuel Tax for Transportation Infrastructure Financing

Because of the complexity inherent in transitioning to a new revenue system and the urgency of the need, the Commission recommends that Congress embark immediately on an aggressive research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) program. Such a move to a mileage tax does not currently have the support of the White House.

But GM says it wont get the money until the Obama administration is satisfied the company is financially viable. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has suggested a mileage tax for drivers as a way to pay for the Obama administration’s plans to spend $556 billion over six years on transportation projects. That fund in turn pays a sizable of portion, but not all, of the costs related to the Interstate Highway System.
