Since it was not a Level 2 charger, I knew it would not gain much juice overnight. On the last day I knew I would have to get a full charge to make it back to Heathrow and leave it with enough juice for the driver who would collect it. Since I was attending the Detroit Auto Show, I could replicate my UK trip for comparison.

Some electric cars, like the Tesla Model S Long Range , are capable of covering more than 400 miles without needing to top up. It was only around 15 years ago that EVs could barely travel 50 miles before running out of juice. Unless, perhaps, you’re getting a Tesla, in which case you’ll probably collect it directly from them.

Hit the jump for a comparison that includes plenty of pics and video. It is thought that the cars that Renault is building to function with the Better Place model will have the ability to have its power supply swapped and the newly announced Tesla Model S is said to also incorporate this concept. Just one remark from a practitioner.

That way you have a fair basis of comparison, you know, apples to apples and all that jazz. Blending the MPG of SUVs and small cars understates the real consumption and rewards automakers for building gas hogs and unsafe micro cars which makes people want to buy "safe" gas hogs. Looks like they failed. Deliveries start in 2011.
