The Toyota Prius was once reviled by most enthusiasts and often the butt of jokes, even in pop culture. Prius drivers were stereotyped as left-lane camping, NPR-listening, Green Party-voting smug virtue-signalers. But it was based in one truth – the Prius might save you a lot of gas but man it was no fun to drive.

The Toyota Prius has pretty much always been focused solely on fuel economy. The design was driven by the desire to maximize MPGs. If you bought a Prius (or leased one) you likely bought it for fuel economy – or maybe because it was affordable. The Prius’s new duds make the car more attractive but it remains wedge-shaped.

Toyota still has not made any money on the Prius. Another point; a Jetta diesel has near the same mileage as a Prius and the Jetta Blue TDI will exceed the Prius. Glad to see the variety & availability of electic commuter cars (vs hybrids & PHEV) is rising. I’m sick of hearing about the Prius….I
