Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA will place ten Prius plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHV) with Xcel Energy’s SmartGridCity project in Boulder, Colorado. The SmartGridCity project is the first fully functioning smart grid enabled city. Its goal is to provide increased grid reliability and energy use information.

Households with plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and smart meters actively managed how, when and where they charged their cars based on electricity rates but rarely took advantage of online feedback, according to a two-year study by a team at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute ( RASEI ).

Today we could be using lead-acid EVs, lead-carbon-acid EVs, or nickel metal hydride or lithium-ion hybrids. The true impact of electric vehicles should consider the make-up of the power grids where these cars will be used. Toyota still has not made any money on the Prius. Oh, but theres that nasty carbon based fuel again.
