The US Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is working with Ecopetrol, the largest oil company in Colombia, to process the residue from sugar cane and palm oil harvesting into fuel ethanol for blending with gasoline. Colombia has an abundance of biomass in the form of sugar cane.

Major new contributors to the growth of global biofuels between 2009 and 2015 include Indonesia, France, China, India, Thailand, Colombia, Malaysia, Philippines and Argentina. Those technologies which have thus far added major oil company joint venture partners seem to have the greatest opportunity for first commercial operations.

UOP is moving faster commercially on the Green Diesel side, with the Diamond Green project with Darling International and Valero Energy nearly complete. Military personnel from Colombia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Republic of Philippines, Thailand, Tonga and the United Kingdom will also participate.
