The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected two projects that will test emerging enhanced water recovery (EWR) technologies for their potential to produce useable water from CO 2 storage sites. Once treated, the clean water could be re-used for beneficial purposes, including supplemental cooling water at a power station.

Kasdin also said that Proterro is in the process of commissioning a pilot plant in Florida and has completed a preliminary design, layout and associated cost estimate for a demonstration-scale plant. The Bunge pilot plant will replicate the operations of Proterro’s US pilot plant in Orlando, Florida, where four photobioreactors are currently deployed. Proterro’s photobioreactor, cyanobacteria and its entire sugar-making process have been granted patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Earlier, an existing coalbed methane well operated by El Paso Exploration & Production had been converted for CO 2 injection, and four wells drilled to monitor reservoir pressure, gas composition, water quality, and the CO 2 plume. The final phase, the development phase (2007–2018), will conduct large-volume carbon storage tests.
