The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. PHEVs/EREVs can fill the gap and provide a cheaper alternative to BEVs until battery prices decline enough to take out the ICE. The company says its charge spots would have voltage on par with standard household outlets.
