It shares an all-new platform with the purely petrol Outlander version. litre combustion petrol engine allied with twin electric motors, a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack and all-wheel-drive. For a plug-in hybrid it is, but those prices are some $15,000 more than the equivalent Outlander petrol versions. Is it good value?

The vehicles run on lithium ion batteries which, using specialist, high-power charging equipment, can be can be fast charged in less than fifteen minutes. When theyre ready, they will be sold to companies who want to be seen promoting green technology. And you can use the sockets you have at home to charge, without a problem.

But whereas the EV6 is based on a dedicated EV architecture, the Niro relies on an ICE platform to allow for the petrol engine for the hybrid model. But even as a hybrid the Niro doesn’t come particularly cheap. But it’s spacious by compact SUV standards. Kia Niro EV GT-Line is capped at around 100kW for charging.

Its short overhangs, “one-bow line” profile and stretched wheelbase take some getting used to, while a strange shut line from the A-pillar – part of a sealed bonnet – and external flap to re-fill the windscreen washer reservoir don’t help. Its EQ owners simply weren’t using it very much, apparently.
