MEPs also want to include emissions reduction ceilings on mercury, and a midpoint target for most caps of 2025. The Commission’s proposal does not require any legally-biding reductions for 2025 and delays action until 2030. The report will be put to a plenary vote in Strasbourg in October. —Julie Girling.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid. The company partners with approved installers charging $1,200-$3,000. So far, most start as hybrids.

A January 2007 Pacific National Laboratory study shows that if we woke up tomorrow and all our vehicles could plug in, todays grid could support more than three-quarters of them charging at night without building a single power plant. At the moment, only 2004-2007 Priuses , and to a limited extent, the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrids.
