Under a proposal submitted to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) this week, San Diego-based SDG&E is seeking approval to build charging infrastructure to enable about 3,000 medium/heavy-duty vehicles to go electric. One cutting-edge element of the proposal is an electric school bus vehicle-to-grid pilot.

Mexico-based steel-maker Tyasa is building a compact steel mill that incorporates a new electric arc furnace from Siemens that reduces CO 2 emissions by up to 30% compared to conventional electric arc furnaces. It considerably reduces the strain on the furnace and lessens the repercussions for the power grid.

The station, called Fengning and located about 200 kilometers north of Beijing, will store up to 40 gigawatt-hours of energy, and help keep the grid on clean energy when the wind isn’t blowing or the sun’s not shining. The wind part of the project plans a total of 3,000 megawatts from wind farms it will build in three counties in New Mexico.
