MIT: hybrid cathodes could boost energy capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries

Green Car Congress

Researchers at MIT and in China are proposing a new class of dense intercalation-conversion hybrid cathodes by combining intercalation-type Mo 6 S 8 with conversion-type sulfur (HMSC) to realize a Li–S full cell. This is comparable to some commercial batteries, indicating that the new device does match its predicted characteristics.

China team devises boron-doped carbon-sulfur aerogel with consecutive core-shell structures for high-capacity, long-life Li-S battery

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Jiangsu Normal University in China have devised a boron-doped carbon-sulfur (BCS) aerogel with consecutive “core-shell” stuctures as a binder-free cathode for lithium-sulfur batteries. These problems result in low specific capacity and poor cycling life of Li-S batteries.

Graphene oxide-sulfur (GO-S) nanocomposite cathodes for high-capacity, stable cycling lithium sulfur batteries

Green Car Congress

A team from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Tsinghua University (China) have synthesized graphene oxide-sulfur (GO-S) nanocomposite cathodes and applied them in lithium/sulfur cells to show a high reversible capacity of 950-1400 mAh g -1 and stable cycling for more than 50 deep cycles at 0.1C (1C = 1675 mA g -1 ).

New multi-functional binder improves cycleability of Li-S batteries

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Zhejiang University (China) have developed a multi-functional binder with cation-conductive polymer and polysulfide absorbents that improves the discharge capacity and rate cycleability of Li-sulfur batteries. The Li–S battery showed very low capacity degradation rate of 0.08% per cycle at 1C rate.
