Buoyed by the US government’s CARS (“Cash for Clunkers”) program, US auto sales slowed their decline in the US in July, dropping on 12.1% to 554, 527 units, while light truck sales dropped 14.1% Toyota Motor Sales, USA (TMS) reported July sales of 174,872, down 11.4% Light truck sales were down 10.1% year-on-year.

What would happen when the cash for clunkers sales boom came to an end has been a question many automotive executives in the USA dared not think about. September 2009 light duty vehicle sales dropped back to pre-incentive lows with 745,997 cars and light duty trucks sold during the month according to Autodata.

Plug-ins can be moving the USA to regain its energy independence with good ole homegrown American, if not Arizona solar, electrons! After all, if the US Stimulus Package program could do "Cash for Clunkers," then why not "Cash for Conversions!". A plug and a pack can make a car a 101 MPG vehicle aided by electricity. !

And the first plug-in cars mass-produced in the USA in a century will go on sale this fall. As batteries get cheaper and smaller, and motors get light enough to fit inside wheels, we’ll be able to upgrade smaller cars. We’ll add targeted incentives to jump-start this successor to the $4,500 “Cash for Clunkers” program.
