In the aftermath of the summer sales boom fueled by the US Cash for Clunkers program, September 2009 light duty vehicles sales dropped back to pre-incentive lows. The Prius posted September sales of 10,984 units, up 1% from September 2008, but down 42% from August 2009. Sales of the Escape/Milan hybrid were down 11.3%

Buoyed by the US government’s CARS (“Cash for Clunkers”) program, US auto sales slowed their decline in the US in July, dropping on 12.1% Hybrid gains were largely due to an increase in Prius sales (up 29.7% Ford Escape sales totaled 20,241, a July record and up 94% versus a year ago, and Mercury Mariner sales were up 71%.

The top 10 vehicles bought under the programme were: the Toyota Corolla; Honda Civic; Toyota Camry; Ford Focus FWD; Hyundai Elantra; Nissan Versa; Toyota Prius; Honda Accord; Honda Fit; and the Ford Escape FWD.
