Wave rotor technology has been explored since 1906, although its first significant application was in 1940 by Brown Boveri Company (BBC, today ABB) which used it as a high pressure stage for a gas turbine locomotive engine. Mazda produced 150,000 Comprex diesel cars.

The LowCVP is calling on UK innovators to submit creative concepts with the potential to cut emissions from road vehicles without the need for radical new infrastructure. The target of the Challenge is mainstream passenger cars producing less than 80 g CO 2 /km. The Exhaust port is located on the outer side of the engine block.

Although the HPE approach can in concept be applied to both spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition engines (CI), after an evaluation of engine types, the team decided that downsized SI engines offered the best target for an HPE application. The concept engine uses the Bosch electro-hydraulic valve system (EHVS).

Ilmor Engineering will present a new cutaway version of the Ilmor five-stroke concept engine at the show. Ilmor, based in the UK, has traditionally focused on racing engines, but now as a member of the UK Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership its business is becoming increasingly diverse. The event takes place from June 16-18.

Unlike conventional engines, the Scuderi engine relies on just one crankshaft revolution and the engine is capable of producing more torque than conventional petrol and diesel variants. Currently the engine prototype is undergoing testing and analysis in San Antonio, Texas.
