Mazda hosted Green Car Congress at a SKYACTIV Technologies media workshop this week in Vancouver, Canada, at which engineering management explained the development philosophy, approach and results for the initial set of SKYACTIV technologies. Regenerative braking can thus serve as the predominant source of power to charge the battery.

In Li-ion batteries, Li ions (Li + ) leave the cathode during charging and move through the electrolyte and separator to intercalate into the anode. As the technology gets fixed, the anode is more of an issue related to fast charge. and re-evaluate their expectations for range. The reverse happens on discharge. Click to enlarge.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles.
