The major driver for the project is the need to decarbonize the electrical grid, protect it from cybersecurity attacks and make it more resilient. We will be replicating the entire California power grid on one campus. Solar panel output depends on the weather, for example, as do wind turbines.

Geologic storage of hydrogen gas could make it economically possible to produce and distribute large quantities of hydrogen fuel for a growing fuel cell electric vehicle market. In addition to cost savings, underground storage of hydrogen gas offers advantages in volume. Other fuels are already stored geologically.
