Denmark is planning a hydrogen island designed to generate about 1 million tonnes of offshore hydrogen starting in 2030. Longer term, California, the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, Japan, and Western Australia are all looking to the sea to help meet their demands for hydrogen. It turns out that the former option is better.

A hydrogen-powered version of Hyundai’s Tucson sport utility vehicle has already appeared in southern California showrooms. In August 2014, Hyundai’s ix35 fuel cell model was driven a record distance for a hydrogen-powered production car on a single tank, covering 435 miles across three Scandinavian countries.

It is aggressively in talks with Portland General Electric Plug-In Charging Stations , ( POR ) and other states including Michigan, and California that are scrambling to offer incentives. There are at least a half dozen different technologies to power cars with electricity under construction. They will not meet my needs.

A key thing, he said, will be to recharge the batteries at an acceptable time for the electricity grid — to “make sure people aren’t charging at the very peak, peak time,” like late afternoon when the electricity grid is already weighted down by demands like air conditioning.
