What is needed now is a different focus for the debate, one with the potential to build public support over time. Business as usual is unsustainable over the long run. Innovation should become that focus.

When we were first starting off at Daimler Truck, trying to find a battery cell supplier that would build us a pack that was good in the truck was difficult. I was a big part of building the first-of-its-kind—at least in the Western world that we knew of—heavy-duty charging site in Portland, Oregon. It’s called Electric Island.

Virtually all the world’s bigmotor manufacturers are building prototypes using lithium-ion batteries butso far they have reached production only in a few low-volume models.
