In April, Axion Power International Inc received an order from Norfolk Southern Corp (NS) for PbC lead-carbon batteries for use in an all-battery-powered switcher locomotive. PbC batteries are multi-celled asymmetrically supercapacitive lead-acid-carbon hybrid batteries. Like a lead-acid battery, it comprises a series of cells.

The hybrid models available today use lead-acid ornickel-metal hydride batteries that are are proven, reliable, and fairlycheap, but their limited storage capacity means that the cars’ driving rangeusing electricity alone is short. Witha 60-mile range, most felt the need to recharge after 30 miles or so.
