In my “working” life (people get very angry when I call driving new cars work), there are a very few “this changes everything” moments, but I just had one when testing the alarmingly good, and relatively cheap, MG4. Years ago, I remember driving my first ever EV, a Mitsubishi WhywhywhyMiEV I think it was called, and hating it enormously.

Mitsubishi i-MiEV – from $12,000 2010 Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Dedicated city cars with cheap-feeling cabins, but rarer than a Pagani Zonda on our shores. BMW i3 – from $28,000 2020 BMW i3s EV. Their approximately 300km range have far more appeal, and look less dorky than the original Leaf.

Stephen Corby: BMW i4. Yes, my best drive in an EV this year was, without question, the BMW i4 Gran Coupe. It’s got the great, meaty steering of a BMW, the low centre of gravity of an EV, the short, sharp wheelbase that provides cornering ability, and a reasonable amount of punch. But is it any good? Renault Megane E-Tech.

Badged the BMW i7 , the lengthy four-door promises up to 625km of WLTP range and 400kW/745Nm from its dual electric motors.
