BMW, Ford, and General Motors are partnering with California not-for-profit utility Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) on a pilot program that will incentivize off-peak EV charging.

SMUD, the US’ sixth-largest, community-owned, not-for-profit electric service provider, announced the Managed Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Pilot, a new electric vehicle program with BMW of North America, Ford and General Motors. Managed EV Charging will make it easier for customers to switch to an EV.

Ford, General Motors (GM), and BMW announced earlier this week that they would partner with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) to roll out an EV charging scheduling program. The electric grid is undergoing significant change right now. Scheduling EV charging allows for a couple of things.

BMW is providing the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Davis with ten battery-electric, BMW i3 models for 18 months. The vehicles are 2015-2016 models, with battery technology that enables an everyday range of about 80-90 miles—suited for in-town driving, and enough for travel between Davis and Sacramento.

BMW of North America and Coulomb Technologies announced that drivers of the BMW ActiveE all-electric vehicle ( earlier post ) will be able to take advantage of the expansion of the ChargePoint Network into the Boston Metro area. The BMW ActiveE is the BMW Group’s next step towards a mass-produced electric vehicle.
