Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. At these prices, people are buying the "environmental feature" -- they want to be among the first owners of the worlds cleanest extended-range vehicles. They are early adopters, buying "Version 1.0" So far, most start as hybrids.

The Circuit is similar to the Tesla Roadster, a $109,000 sports car produced by a small California company. Some will be electric-only, others will be extended-range vehicles in which a gasoline engine will generate electricity on board after about 40 miles of driving on a fully charged battery.

Until then, we also recommend you look at the FAQ at the Climate Progress Blog and the FAQ by Hybrids-Plus , an after-market converter of hybrid cars, for answers to many questions! Fuel cell cars should be plug-in hybrids so that the fuel cell is used only for extended range, and the fuel cell stack and hydrogen storage can be smaller.

For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded.
