Why pay $40K for a GM volt… which will look nothing more than a Malibu anyway and only get 40 miles before the gasoline engine kicks in. Many of the first Prius hybrids that were released are still running strong on their NiMH batteries after 100,000+ miles. In most conversions cost is about the same because of needless weight. However, your claims about batteries needing replacement every five years are dubious at best. Lead batts are around 98% recycled.
