At the 38 th Vienna Motor Symposium Volkswagen is introducing a new, more fuel-efficient “Coasting - Engine off” micro hybrid system—which shuts off the engine completely—as well as a new, compact three-cylinder natural gas engine for the Polo. By John Coulter, CURRENT EV CMO In its new Prime, Toyota offers a RAV4 green version that employs a hybrid drivetrain relying on a gas engine and electric motors that draw power from a plug and regenerative braking. There are 2 Prime trims, SE and XSE, both equipped with All-Wheel Drive and a fully-electric hybrid powertrain.

Andy Frank makes the observation that parallel hybrids (Toyota Prius) are cheaper than series hybrids (Chevy Volt). Bright Automotive says it soon release an electric car with a 100 mile per gallon plus plug-in – and the company says it will keep the car economically priced. In a new report (its fourth on electric car adoption) the Boston Consulting Group forecasts that a combination of hybrid and fully electric powertrains will cut the global market share of pure internal combustion engines (ICEs) by about 50% by 2030. The third relevant area of technology is electric power generation.
