Led by strong growth in Spain and Italy, new car registrations in Europe’s Big 5 markets grew by 8.6% million, April produced further gains across the top five European markets with SUVs driving higher volume and counting for 24.4% The appeal of SUVs continues to gain further momentum at the expense of more traditional models.

Tesla briefly entered the list of top sellers, with the Model Y also topping the SUV sales charts in September. The proof is already on Australian roads in the form of the BYD Atto 3 compact SUV. And, because SUVs are all Australians really care about, it’s a very important EV indeed. It was also a year of EV milestones.

I’ve a few worst nominees on the combustion front – the Tata Xenon ute, Honda City sedan and Chrysler Crossfire spring to mind – but I’ve now got a sole champion on the EV front. The Seres 3 SUV. Seres is a subsidiary of Chinese auto giant Dongfeng, and the Seres 3 has sold in China as the Fengon E3 since 2019.
