General Motors plans to unveil the Chevy Volt, a plug-in hybrid, sometime in 2010, and Toyota may begin selling a plug-in Prius in late 2010 or early 2011. But the new rules could make it virtually impossible for current Prius owners to transform their cars into super-efficient vehicles that get up to 150 mpg. The conversion is simple.

The MiEV runs on a lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged in seven or so hours on a 240-volt line. The Chevy Volt is going to count on an overnight charge from a standard wall outlet. There are choices for 110 volt versus 220 volt, slow versus quick charges, and solar options. By 2011 look for a larger THINK Ox.
