If you build a car as a "kit car" with no real factory, then yes, it will never be an economic success. 80 miles was the range of the EV1 with Lead Acid batteries, that GM tried to use because they wanted the project to fail. it was the first batch of EV1s that they tried to use lead acid batteries and developed problems.
