Mazda has been repositioning itself into the premium category, and the CX-90 will give it a larger SUV to compete with the Acura MDX , Buick Enclave , Kia Telluride , Hyundai Palisade , Subaru Ascent and Toyota Highlande r. The engine works in conjunction with an electric motor and a rechargeable 17.8 liter inline 6-cylinder engine.

The mild hybrid system consists of a 48-volt electrical system that allows the engine to shut off when not needed, increasing fuel economy. This is the most powerful mass production gasoline engine offered by Mazda, putting out 340 hp and 369 lb.

The EPA rates the fuel economy at 19 city/24 highway/21 combined. mpg, but did a bit better on a 207-mile freeway run with the smart cruise control set at 65 mph, achieving 25.1 To aid in fuel economy the Palisade has a start-stop feature where the engine shuts off when coming to a stop and restarts automatically.

The Toyota Highlander Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle – Advanced (FCHV-adv) ( earlier post ) achieved an estimated range of 431 miles on a single full tank of compressed hydrogen gas, and an average fuel economy of 68.3 miles/kg (approximate mpg equivalent) during a day-long trip down the southern California coast.
