Shale oil production generates greenhouse gas emissions at levels similar to conventional crude oil production, according to a pair of new studies released by the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. These are shale formations with low permeability and must be hydraulically fractured to produce oil and gas.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded an agreement to the University of North Dakota Energy and Environmental Research Center (UNDEERC) to extend a study that will enhance the understanding of factors affecting oil production from the Bakken and Three Forks-Sanish formations within the Williston Basin.

Based on three separate methodologies (described below), the independent analysis of the Federal Flow Rate Technical Group analyzing the flow from BP’s gushing undersea well has determined that the overall best initial estimate for the lower and upper boundaries of flow rates of oil is in the range of 12,000 and 19,000 barrels per day.
