GMC confirmed on Tuesday that the limited-edition launch version of its 2024 Sierra EV pickup will arrive in summer 2024—with about 10% more EPA range than originally suggested. GMC has suggested all along that it might not be the “high-volume entry” electric truck that GM CEO Mary Barra stressed in describing the Silverado EV.

General Motors already delivered the Chevrolet Bolt, with the model becoming one of the first affordable EVs offering real utility to customers. It was a similar situation for the Chevy Volt, leaving the brand to lean on a cluster of normal-looking hybrids that were promptly forgotten. Simply chasing volume probably won’t be enough.

For those with the capacity to think back all the way to 2021, you may recall GMC announcing that the all-electric monstrosity that is the Hummer EV would come with a base trim after the limited launch edition (E1) became the less-collectable EV3X. Speaking of which, the Hummer EV 2 was expected to have a fast charge capacity of 400 volts.

The latter figure beats the $112,595 GMC Hummer EV that’s set to reach showrooms in early 2022. GMC is targeting about 350 miles from a roughly 200-kilowatt-hour pack, the largest ever fitted to an electric vehicle. Rivian also plans to offer a more affordable 105-kilowatt-hour pack with a roughly 230-mile range.

First was to introduce the second generation Chevrolet Volt range-extended electric car (which gets tossed in with plug-in hybrids even though its system really takes a different approach).
