Reported sales of hybrids in the US reported by Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM and Nissan dropped 45.5% year-on-year in April to 21,735, despite full month sales for the new Honda Insight and the Ford Fusion and Milan hybrids. The Rx 400h represented a bright spot, with sales up 30.8% The Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade two-mode full-size SUVs posted a combined 632 units, representing 8.4% Honda posted 1,362 units of the Civic Hybrid, down 24.7% The Highlander Hybrid sold 956 units, down 50.7%, representing 19.1% of all Highlander models sold.

The Rx 400h posted 1,556 units, an increase of 28.5% Honda sold 1,076 units of the Civic Hybrid, a 38.3% Honda sold one Accord hybrid in the month. GM reported a total of 923 hybrid sales in January, including: 599 2-mode full-size SUVs (Tahoe, 299; Yukon, 168; Escalade, 132), presenting 8.0% to 5,757 units. to 904 units.

Nickel-metal hydride batteries, proven for many years in hybrids to be safe, could go into PHEVs today -- they would be designed more like the ones Toyota put in its 2002 RAV4 EV compact all-electric SUV than like current hybrid batteries. Engineers note: hybrids need "power batteries," PHEVs need "energy batteries.")
