The demonstration will run from April 2015 (the beginning of fiscal 2015) until the end of fiscal 2020 (March 2021). The independent energy supply system combines a 25 kW photovoltaic facility; a storage battery; hydrogen-producing water electrolysis equipment; hydrogen (275 Nm 3 ) and water tanks; and fuel cells.

The battery storage system electrified by BMW i is sized so it can be placed in the basement or the garage of a detached house, where the stored energy can either be used for electrically-operated devices in the home or for charging the battery of an electric car.

The INEES research project, which ran from 1 June 2012 to 31 December 2015, investigated the possibility of achieving a balancing and stabilizing effect on the power grid using a pool of electric vehicles. The vehicles could store excess electricity as well as put surplus energy back into the power grid.
