These projects will receive more than $115 million in funding to develop and demonstrate systems-level fuel efficiency technologies by 2015, including improved aerodynamics, reducing engine idling technologies, waste heat recovery to increase engine efficiency, advanced combustion techniques, and powertrain hybridization. By combining High Efficiency Clean Combustion (HECC) and Waste Heat Recovery (WHR), each demonstrating greater than 10% improvement in BTE, together with other technologies, it should be possible to improve BTE by 20% to achieve the original DOE target of 50% peak BTE. Finding 3-1. Recommendation 3-7. HYBRID VEHICLES. Recommendation 4-3.
