Let me be clear: GM remains committed to eliminating tailpipe emissions from our light-duty vehicles by 2035. Dealers have likewise expressed the need for more hybrids and fewer battery electric models based on consumer research efforts. However, Buick sales figures have clearly been trending in the wrong direction since roughly 2015.

GM and its joint ventures are launching 17 new and upgraded models in China this year, including the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback; the new Wuling Sunshine; two new Jiefang light-duty trucks, the S230 and F330; and the Insignia Sports Tourer, Zafira Tourer and Astra GTC from Opel. They will open four additional plants in China through 2015.

Including the Cadillac Escalade, SUV sales are up 32%. Combined sales of Chevrolet and GMC large SUVs, which are all new for the 2015 model year, were up 25% compared with a year ago. Cadillac Escalade deliveries nearly doubled and Cadillac’s estimated share of the large luxury SUV segment is now about 37% on a retail basis.
