The Ford Motor Company has selected Toshiba Corporation to supply automotive inverters for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). Toshiba already has a June 2010 contract with Ford under which it will supply high-performance drive motors for HEV and PHEV from 2012, from its facility in Houston, Texas.

The central government’s plan, posted on its website, is targeting the production of 500,000 plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles by 2015, with output to grow to 2 million units of those types by 2020. Energy-saving and new energy vehicles have become the development direction of the international automobile industry.

The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards require that vehicles offered for sale in the US attain an average fuel economy of 40.3 Washington, DC: The National Academies Press, 2015. to 41 mpg by 2021 and 48.7 mpg by 2025. These standards will require the US new vehicle fleet to double in fuel economy between 2012 and 2025.
