Smaller engines with turbochargers have spread throughout new vehicles as a way to meet the increasingly stringent fuel-efficiency rules that started in 2012. But no maker has been as forward about marketing that technology as Ford, which now offers a range of downsized and boosted engines under the EcoBoost brand.

Small utility vehicles are most popular with buyers in this age group; more than 46% of premium Ford Escape Titanium buyers are 56 or older, indicating trendsetting boomers are opting for high-series models loaded with technology and amenities. The 2014 Ford Escape compact utility vehicle features 98.1 cubic feet.

Since 2009, 38% of Ford’s growth has come from vehicles in this super segment, which includes Fiesta, Focus, Fusion and Escape. Ford expects more growth in the super segment, as baby boomers continue to downsize their vehicle purchases and first-time millennial buyers enter the market.

The survey shows continued growth in automaker’s overall use of aluminum reaching a high of 343 lbs (156 kg) per vehicle in 2012—up 5% from 327 lbs (148 kg) in 2009. Using aluminum will extend the efficiencies of other technologies, while enabling secondary cost-savings from downsized powertrains without sacrificing performance.
