In 2011, the largest dollar volume for Li-ion automotive applications could come from the mini EV and EREV segment. Although EVs and extended range electric vehicles represent a lower volume opportunity, they could be moving up in list, depending upon the persistence of government subsidies, he noted. The 8 kWh battery pack for the new 2011 Buick PHEV crossover vehicle is prepared for testing at the General Motors Tech Center in Warren, Michigan. General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011.

The morning session started out with an hour long press conference, the highlight being the unveiling of the Volt’s 230 mpg preliminary EPA city fuel economy finding ( earlier post ), as well as a tour showing selected elements from the studios of the four GM North American brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac. Extended-range electric vehicles — such as the Chevy Volt, which GM says will recharge in three hours — offer another route, adding a small gas engine to keep drivers from feeling stranded without access to fuel. With a 55KWH battery, range is only 157 miles. My Honda Civic averages 34+ MPG over a year period.
