As an example, the UCS “Hybrid Scorecard” gives both the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid a high “hybrid value” rating. By contrast, the 2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid has a very high hybrid value. The luxury Lexus LS 600h L hybrid is the worst offender.

The top two vendors of hybrids in the US, Toyota and Ford, each reported strong gains in hybrid sales in March 2010 year-on-year. year-on-year in March 2010 to 1,066,205 units. to 31 units and the LS 600h dropped 64% to 9 units. Toyota saw its overall hybrid sales grow 21.6% by volume (not day sales rate) to 16,714 units.

Lexus remains the only premium brand in Europe to offer three full hybrids as part of its range: the GS 450h, the LS 600h and the newly-launched RX 450h. Toyota has a global target of one million hybrid sales per year by the early 2010s, with European sales representing up to 10% of this target.

For the third consecutive year, Lexus further expanded its hybrid lineup in July 2007 with the launch of the LS 600h L luxury hybrid sedan, the world’s first vehicle to feature a full-hybrid V8 powertrain. Late summer of 2009 will see the launch of the 2010 Lexus HS 250h, the world’s first dedicated luxury hybrid vehicle.

The improved performance (relative to recent months) was led by the Prius, which, with the 2010 model on sale, posted June sales of 12,998 units, up 10.5% The GS 450h hybrid posted a 63% drop year-on-year to 27 units, while the LS 600h saw a 57.5% Toyota posted sales of 16,744 hybrid vehicles in June, down 5.8% drop to 31 units.
