The new DBFC uses a polymer fiber membrane (PFM) rather than a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM); metal oxides, such as LaNiO 3 and MnO 2 as cathode catalysts; and CoO as the anode catalyst. The membrane in DBFC serves both for ion transfer and as a separator between anode and cathode compartments.
