With the total electrode weight of a supercapacitor system being typically one-fourth to one-half of the total system weight, the system-level specific energy of graphene-based supercapacitors can exceed 21.4-42.8 Wh/kg, which is comparable to that of a modern nickel metal hydride battery used in a hybrid vehicle.

The hybrid has also achieved comparable MPG performance with that of the same model powered by Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries but at a significantly lower cost, ALABC said. The original 2010 Civic Hybrid carried an EPA fuel economy rating of 42 mpg combined (40 city, 45 highway).

If they achieve at least a 6% improvement in their fuel efficiency, their BSOG rate will be increased, from first of April 2010, by 3%. The Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG) was reformed this April so that bus operators will now only receive an increase in their grant if they achieve fuel efficiency improvements.

Researchers say: Li-ion battery systems will be 5 percent more energy efficient than the nickel-metal hydride batteries used in today’s hybrid electric vehicles. Unlike NiMH batteries, Li-ion can be tuned to increase power to boost acceleration, or to increase energy to extend driving distance.

The ActiveHybrid X6 will reach US BMW Centers in fourth-quarter 2009, and the ActiveHybrid 7 will arrive in the US in Spring 2010. Energy storage is provided by a NiMH battery pack positioned beneath the floor of the luggage compartment. Both will make their world premieres at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in September.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Committed to sales of 10,000 or more vehicles in late 2010, with increasing production in 2011. Aims to get Saturn Vue on road in 2010; no production goal.
