ABB and Volvo Buses partnering on fast-charging system for hybrid and electric buses

ABB and Volvo Buses are partnering to co-develop and to commercialize electric and hybrid buses with open standards-based direct current (DC) fast charging systems. That system enables onboard batteries to be charged in 15 seconds with a 400 kW boost at selected stops using a roof-mounted system (“Flash station”). Volvo hybrid bus.

The consortium considered it particularly important to re-assess the role of FCEVs in the light of recent technological breakthroughs in fuel cell and electric systems that have now increased their efficiency and cost-competitiveness significantly. Charging times are also significantly longer: 6-8 hours using normal charging equipment.
