The Gen III Prius offers an EPA-rated combined cycle fuel economy of 50 mpg (now revealed to comprise 50 mpg city and 49 mpg highway). The 2ZR-FXE engine is SULEV-rated (with AT-PZEV) in California, and has a Federal Tier 2 Bin 3 rating. Nominal pack voltage of the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery remains at 201.6

Since the early 90’s, during the early stages of first-generation Prius development, Toyota has been committed to in-house R&D of advanced nickel-metal hydride batteries. A total of 20 first generation fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHV) are in service in California with universities, corporations and government agencies.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. Small long-term evaluation program, including modeling of vehicle-to-grid building benefits and economics, begun with Southern California Edison, joined by EPRI, other utilities, US DOE. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009.
